Concrete Chimney Crowns in Waukesha

The crown is the topmost portion of a masonry chimney, and it’s the first line of defense against the elements. When a crown cracks or deteriorates, it allows water to enter the chimney and eventually your home.

Most chimneys built before 2010 have what’s called a mortar wash or splay. The mason slopes mortar (sometimes reinforced with horsehair or fibers) up from the brick edge to the flue tile. That type of crown generally cracks within 10–15 years and starts letting water into the chimney. Waukesha County’s older houses mean a large share of local chimneys still have those original mortar wash crowns. Wisconsin winters don’t help: repeated freeze-thaw cycles force water deeper into existing cracks with each thaw, widening them until the damage reaches the masonry below.

Under Wisconsin’s building code, chimney caps must have a minimum 2-inch thickness, a 1-inch overhang on all sides, and a slip joint between the flue and the cap. Those code minimums are the floor for crown construction, not the ideal specification. Crowns built only to minimum standards can still fail early under Wisconsin weather conditions.

How Butler Chimneys LLC Builds Concrete Chimney Crowns

Our crowns are poured with 4,000 psi concrete and reinforced with rebar. Rebar distributes structural stress across the full slab instead of concentrating it at a single point, which matters when freeze-thaw cycles load the crown repeatedly each season. We pour crowns 5.5 inches thick with a 2-inch overhang, exceeding Wisconsin’s minimum requirements on both dimensions.

We meet Wisconsin’s slip joint requirements and go one step further with a bond break between the bricks and the concrete. Concrete and brick expand at different temperature points. When the bricks begin to expand from summer heat and the concrete doesn’t, those opposing forces can crack the bricks or separate them from their mortar bond without a break in place.

To finish it off, we cut a drip groove underneath the overhang to stop water from traveling back to the brick face. That groove directs runoff away from the vertical chimney surface and slows mortar joint erosion in the courses below the crown. Crown jobs are documented with before-and-after photos so you can see exactly what was done and what changed. There’s no guesswork about the finished spec.
