What Is a Smoke Chamber?

In your masonry fireplace, there’s an area called the smoke chamber. In most fireplaces, you can see it by shining a strong light up through the damper. Its job is to safely transition smoke and hot gases from your fireplace into the narrower flue of your chimney.

Roughly the shape of an upside-down funnel, the smoke chamber starts just above the damper and ends where the chimney begins. The brick along the sides is often stepped outward, one above the other, in a process called corbelling, creating an upside-down staircase of exposed brick ledges and mortar joints. That exposed corbelling creates turbulence in rising gases, slows draft efficiency, and gives creosote and soot more surface area to accumulate. To protect the integrity and improve the efficiency of your smoke chamber, the corbelled areas and any gaps, cracks, or jagged edges should be coated and parged smooth with an insulating high-temperature refractory mortar such as Chamber Coat.

The portions of a masonry chimney you can’t see are often loosely constructed. If an ember finds its way through holes in the smoke chamber, it can escape the chimney completely through gaps in the masonry and ignite the wood structure of your home.

The Danger of a Defective Smoke Chamber

Both NFPA 211 (section 11.2.1.13) and the International Residential Code (IRC R1001.8) require that the inner surfaces of the smoke chamber be parged smooth with an insulating refractory mortar and that no surface be inclined more than 45 degrees from vertical. Corbelled, unparged smoke chambers don’t meet either standard. Gaps and defects in the smoke chamber wall allow heat to transfer to surrounding combustible materials, and fires can develop hours after a fireplace appears to have gone out because embers can work slowly through masonry defects.

These pictures were taken at a fire investigation Butler Chimneys LLC was called out to. The homeowner said the fire had gone out around 9 PM. However, they were awoken by fire alarms at 2 AM on Christmas morning and had to rush out of their home. Thankfully, everyone made it out safely, and the fire department was able to save the majority of the structure. How Smoke Chamber Repair Works

Parging is the process of applying a smooth coat of high-temperature refractory mortar to the interior walls of the smoke chamber, sealing cracks, filling gaps, and covering corbelled steps to create a continuous surface. Our technicians perform the work from inside the firebox, applying the refractory mortar directly to the smoke chamber walls. Once the parging has cured, the fireplace can be ready for safe use. Parging can be completed as a standalone repair when the flue liner is otherwise up to code, or alongside chimney relining when both components need attention.
