What a Chimney Liner Actually Does
The liner is the interior channel running from your firebox through the flue to the chimney cap. It does three things: it directs combustion gases safely out of the home, it protects surrounding masonry from the heat and corrosive byproducts of combustion, and it sizes the flue for proper draft so your appliance burns efficiently. Take away any one of those three functions, and you have a safety problem, an efficiency problem, or both.
Clay tile liners can crack from thermal cycling, especially after a chimney fire. Older homes sometimes have no liner at all. And when you add a gas insert, wood stove, or pellet appliance, the original liner may be the wrong size or material for the new appliance, which creates condensation, deterioration, and draft problems even if the liner looks intact.

Is It Safe to Use a Fireplace With a Cracked Liner?
That depends on crack severity and location, but a cracked liner can allow heat and combustion gases to contact surrounding masonry and framing. We’d recommend treating a known crack as a reason to pause use until an inspection determines the scope. Some cracks are minor; others are not, and there’s no way to know without looking.
How Long Does a Stainless Steel Liner Last?
Stainless steel liners are generally rated for the life of the appliance they serve when properly installed and maintained. Actual longevity depends on steel grade, fuel type, and whether annual inspections catch developing issues early. The grade specified for your appliance matters. Not all stainless is rated the same for every fuel type.
Does Adding a Gas Insert Mean I Need a New Liner?
Often, yes. Using an oversized flue with a gas insert is a common cause of condensation and liner deterioration. Gas appliances require a liner sized specifically for the BTU output and venting requirements of that appliance. We evaluate liner compatibility as part of every insert installation.
