Wood Inserts vs. Gas Inserts: What to Know Before You Choose
Both wood fireplace inserts and gas fireplace inserts fit into an existing masonry or factory-built fireplace opening and connect to the existing chimney, but the liner requirements and day-to-day experience are different.
Wood-Burning Inserts: A wood insert connects to a single 6-inch stainless steel liner that runs the full height of the flue. It delivers the traditional fire experience with significantly better efficiency than an open hearth, which can lose most of its heat up the chimney. The tradeoff is maintenance: wood burning produces creosote, which accumulates in the liner and requires regular chimney sweeping to manage safely.
Gas Inserts: A gas insert runs on natural gas or propane and typically includes a blower that circulates heat into the room. The liner setup is different: a co-linear system uses two flexible liners run side by side, one supplying combustion air to the firebox and one exhausting gases out. Liner sizing depends on the specific insert model, so the right configuration is determined during the pre-installation inspection. On/off convenience and cleaner combustion are the practical advantages. Connecting a gas appliance to an improperly matched flue can create carbon monoxide risk, which is why liner sizing is confirmed before the job starts, not assumed.
