Wisconsin weather can wreak havoc on a masonry chimney. With our fall and spring freeze-thaw cycles, the chimney begins to deteriorate, and once this process starts, it can snowball quickly. A crack in the chimney crown allows water into the structure, which soaks into the softer interior of the brick. As that water freezes, it expands, leading to mortar joint deterioration, brick cracking, and spalling. Most of this damage goes unnoticed until major repairs are required. Annual inspections aligned to the NFPA standard are a reliable way to catch deterioration before it reaches rebuild territory.
The Chimney Rebuilding Process
Rebuilding a masonry chimney is physically intensive and time-consuming. Work areas are covered in tarps and fully prepped before demolition begins. When a chimney is too tall or positioned in a difficult area, safety equipment and work platforms are set up first. Nothing proceeds until the site is safe.
Heavy-duty demolition tools and buckets are used to dismantle the chimney and bring debris to the ground, and all debris is hauled away from the property. The rebuild starts with sourcing the best available brick and mortar match. That match is presented to you for approval before any materials are ordered, so what goes back on your home reflects your expectations, not just our judgment. Our masons focus on masonry restoration and bring the chimney back to its original appearance, provided the original design wasn’t the cause of the failure.
After the rebuild, forms are set around the top of the chimney, and a concrete crown is poured that exceeds Wisconsin minimum code requirements: a 1-inch overhang and 2 inches of solid concrete. After the crown cures, forms are removed, and everything is sealed. We document the completed work with before-and-after photos so you can see exactly what changed, and you receive a digital copy of your receipt and service paperwork by email the same day.
