Our Tuckpointing Process
Every tuckpointing job we perform follows the same sequence from start to finish. We document the work with before-and-after photos so you can see exactly what changed, not just hear about it.
- Roof and ground protection: Tarps go down around the chimney base and on the surrounding ground before any grinding begins.
- Mortar removal: Masonry grinders remove deteriorated mortar to a minimum depth of three-quarters of an inch. Shallow removal produces a weak bond that fails prematurely.
- Joint washing: Joints are washed out to clear dust and loose debris before new mortar is applied.
- Mortar selection: We select a mortar mixture matched to your specific brick or stone. Mortar can be formulated in several types, and using the wrong one against an existing substrate leads to early failure.
- Waterproofing additive: A powdered waterproofing agent is blended into the mortar mixture to protect the finished joint against moisture infiltration.
- Joint filling: Pointing bags are used to work mortar evenly into each joint.
- Striking: Once the mortar sets, joints are struck with tools to create a concave profile. This isn’t just an aesthetic choice. It’s how a correctly finished joint sheds water away from the masonry face.
- Brush finish: A masonry brush completes the surface for a clean, uniform appearance.
