Wood Inserts vs. Gas Inserts: What Each Fuel Type Delivers
An open masonry fireplace draws freely from the room and sends most of its heat up the flue. A fireplace insert fits into that existing firebox and converts it into a sealed, efficient heat source. The right fuel type for you depends on your priorities, your gas line access, and the condition of your flue.
Wood Fireplace Inserts
A wood-burning insert uses a heavy steel or cast-iron firebox with an insulated glass door and a sealed combustion system that controls airflow rather than drawing freely from the room. A properly sized wood insert can heat a substantial portion of a home on a cord of wood, making it a strong choice for homeowners who want to supplement or offset their primary heating system. Our technicians evaluate your firebox dimensions and flue condition before recommending a unit because fit and liner compatibility matter as much as BTU output.
Gas Fireplace Inserts
A gas insert connects to an existing gas line and vents through a stainless steel liner run up the masonry flue. You get on-demand heat without wood storage, ash cleanup, or fire management. Many homeowners choose gas when convenience is the priority, particularly when the masonry fireplace was rarely used before the upgrade. Our technicians hold CSIA certification from the Chimney Safety Institute of America. That credential requires demonstrated knowledge of liner sizing, clearance requirements, and venting configuration. It’s the standard we train to and the standard every installation is measured against.
Training isn’t something we do once and move on from. Every Tuesday, our team dedicates an hour of its weekly meeting to a focused topic: safety, code refreshers, technical procedures, or industry standards. On the last Friday of every month, we pull the full team from the field for a complete training day covering safety, technical procedures, and hands-on field work. We’ve opened those monthly sessions to other chimney and fireplace companies in the area, which is unusual in a trade where most competitors train in isolation. The Insert Installation Process at Butler Chimneys LLC
Every insert project starts with a review of your fireplace’s history, a visual flue inspection, and an exterior chimney walkthrough. Before we leave, you get a full verbal summary of findings and any recommendations. Nothing is assumed. We look at what’s actually there.
Unit selection follows from what we find. Firebox dimensions, flue condition, and your heating goals all shape the recommendation. Pricing is presented openly at that point, before any work is scheduled.
Most inserts require a new stainless steel liner to meet clearance and code requirements. Our team handles the full liner installation as part of the project scope. An undersized or oversized liner affects draft, combustion, and overall system performance, so sizing is done to match the unit being installed. Older masonry chimneys with damaged clay tile liners may also need relining work before the insert liner goes in.
When the job is complete, we send same-day digital paperwork and photo documentation by email so you have a clear record of everything that was done.

Will My Existing Masonry Fireplace Accept an Insert?
Most masonry fireplaces can accommodate an insert, but firebox dimensions, flue condition, and liner compatibility all determine which units will work. We inspect before recommending anything. If there’s a compatibility issue, we’ll tell you what needs to be addressed first.
Do I Need a New Liner with an Insert Installation?
In most cases, yes. A properly sized liner is required to meet clearance and venting requirements for the unit being installed. We confirm liner scope during the inspection and include it in your estimate. Older chimneys with damaged clay tile liners may need relining work before the insert liner can be installed safely.
How Much Does a Fireplace Insert Cost?

How Often Should I Have My Fireplace Inspected After an Insert Is Installed?
The National Fire Protection Association recommends annual inspections for all fireplaces and connected systems. We align our service schedule to that standard.
