Why Annual Fireplace Inspections Matter in Milwaukee County
NFPA 211, the national standard for chimneys, fireplaces, vents, and solid fuel-burning appliances, recommends annual inspections for all systems. We align our service schedule to that standard and walk every customer through why it applies to their specific setup. A system that passed inspection two seasons ago may have developed new problems since: heat cycles expand and contract masonry, liners degrade, and combustion deposits accumulate year over year.
Winters add another layer of stress. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles subject masonry chimneys to conditions that cause stress cracks in cold flue tiles and mortar deterioration that worsens with each successive season. Annual inspections catch these developing issues before they become safety hazards.
NFPA 211 defines three inspection levels based on the situation:
- Level I is the minimum standard for systems in continued, unchanged use, appropriate for homeowners who use their fireplace regularly and haven’t made any changes to the appliance or venting system.
- Level II is required when changes are made to a system, an appliance is added, or a property is sold or transferred. It includes video scanning of the flue liner interior and covers accessible attic, crawl space, and basement areas. If you’re buying a home, a Level II inspection is what NFPA recommends before using the fireplace.
- Level III is called for when a hazard is suspected in a concealed area of the structure: a deeper investigation when Levels I or II reveal cause for concern.
Smoke chambers deserve particular attention. That cavity connecting the firebox to the flue is invisible during normal use. Spalling mortar, open joints, and unlined surfaces in the smoke chamber can allow heat and flames to reach combustible framing without any visible warning. Infrequently used chimneys aren’t exempt either. Animal nests, moisture intrusion, and masonry cracks can develop even without active fires, making the system unsafe to use without repairs.

A fireplace inspection evaluates the structural and safety condition of the entire system, distinct from a chimney sweep, which removes combustion deposits from the flue. Many appointments combine both services. Our inspection covers three areas:
- Firebox and Smoke Chamber - mortar condition, liner integrity, smoke chamber surface and joint quality
- Flue Interior - creosote classification, tile or liner condition, obstructions
- Exterior Chimney - crown, cap, flashing, masonry, and overall structural condition

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I have my fireplace inspected?
NFPA recommends annual inspections regardless of how often you use the system. Even a fireplace used only a few times a season accumulates creosote, and Milwaukee County’s freeze-thaw cycles can cause masonry changes between one season and the next.
What’s the difference between a chimney sweep and a fireplace inspection?
A chimney sweep removes combustion deposits, primarily creosote, from the flue. A fireplace inspection evaluates the structural and safety condition of the entire system: firebox, smoke chamber, flue liner, crown, cap, and exterior masonry. Many customers schedule both at the same appointment.
My fireplace hasn’t been used in years. Do I still need an inspection?
