NFPA 211 Inspection Levels Explained

NFPA 211 is the recognized industry standard for chimney and fireplace inspections. It defines three levels, and which level applies depends on your chimney’s condition, history, and what’s prompting the inspection. Waukesha County’s cold winters and persistent freeze-thaw cycles put real stress on masonry and accelerate creosote buildup in the flue, which makes understanding these levels and following an annual schedule especially important for local homeowners.

Level 1

Defined as an inspection of readily accessible portions of the chimney exterior, interior, and the accessible portions of the appliance and chimney connection. A Level 1 is appropriate when the system hasn’t changed and has been maintained regularly.

Level 2

Defined as an inspection of any accessible portions of the chimney, including as it passes through attics, crawl spaces, and basements. A rooftop inspection is also included. From the fireplace, video scanning equipment is used to get a visual of the interior of the chimney chase. This allows us to check flue liner integrity and identify hidden issues like creosote buildup or cracks that aren’t visible from outside.

Level 3

An inspection that involves the deconstruction of one or more portions of your chimney, for example, the crown or an interior wall. These inspections are uncommon but may be necessary when evaluating a significant or costly repair where internal access is the only way to confirm the scope.

What Happens During an Inspection?

Every sweep appointment begins with your technician reviewing your fireplace’s history with you. That conversation shapes what we’re looking for before we touch anything. From there, we move through a visual flue inspection, then close with a full exterior chimney walkthrough.

Before we leave, you will receive a complete verbal summary of everything we found and any repair recommendations. There’s no guessing about what the technician saw or what comes next. Every appointment is documented with before-and-after photos, so you can see exactly what changed. Afterward, a digital copy of your receipt and service paperwork is sent to you by email, and your full appointment history is available anytime through our client portal.

Training That Goes Beyond Certification

Every technician who visits your home is at minimum CSIA-certified on codes and standards and follows CSIA’s strict code of ethics. But certification is a starting point, not an endpoint. Every Tuesday morning, our entire team holds a focused training session on a specific chimney-related topic, whether that’s a code refresher, a technical procedure, or a safety standard update.

Every last Friday of the month, the whole team steps out of the field for a full-day training covering safety, technical procedures, and hands-on field work.
