What Sets Butler Chimneys Apart?
Plenty of companies offer chimney sweeping. Fewer can tell you how their technicians train, what they charge before the work starts, or how they document what they found. Here’s what we do differently.
- CSIA-Certified Technicians - Every inspection and cleaning is performed by a CSIA-certified technician. That certification requires passing a standardized exam covering codes, safety standards, and field practices. It isn’t a title we hand out internally.
- Upfront, Fair Pricing - We discuss pricing openly before work begins. Butler Chimneys LLC was founded on the belief that being able to charge more doesn’t mean you should. The number we quote is the number you pay.
- Virtual Estimates - Can’t get us on-site right away? We offer virtual estimates so you can understand scope and cost without waiting for a scheduled visit.
- Weekly and Monthly Training - Every Tuesday, our team dedicates an hour of our meeting to a focused training topic: safety, code refreshers, or technical procedures. Every last Friday of the month, we pull the entire team out of the field for a full-day training session. We’ve opened those monthly sessions to other chimney and fireplace companies in the area. That’s uncommon in a trade where most competitors train behind closed doors. We do it because raising the bar across the industry makes homes safer.
- Photo Documentation and Same-Day Paperwork - We photograph our work before and after every appointment so you can see exactly what changed. A digital copy of your receipt and service paperwork is emailed to you the same day.
- Consistent Communication - We check in before arrival, keep you informed throughout the job, and follow up after completion. The Chimney Sweeping Process
Our CSIA-certified technicians follow a structured process at every appointment. It reflects the safety standards on which the certification is built. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that a fireplace be inspected annually, and our inspection process is designed to help determine whether cleaning is needed and give you peace of mind when using your fireplace.
Your technician can greet you at the door and go over a few questions to better understand the history and use of your fireplace. This is a great time to voice any concerns you may have.
Next, your technician can complete a visual inspection of the fireplace and flue system to determine whether the chimney needs cleaning.
If cleaning is needed (1/8" or more of creosote visible in the flue system), your technician can set up for the cleaning and inspection process. Creosote is a natural byproduct of wood combustion that builds up in the flue over time. At sufficient levels, it’s a primary cause of chimney fires. Setup includes bringing in the following:
- 2 large canvas tarps. The first is ultra-clean and placed on your floor. The second comes in contact with the debris that comes out of the chimney (if there’s unmovable furniture near the fireplace, it will be covered as well)
- 3-stage HEPA filter vacuum
- Cleaning rod caddy
- Rolling toolbox or tool backpack
- Video scanning equipment
Our cleaning process has come a long way from the days of just running a brush up and down the flue. We now incorporate a drill-and-wipe head system, which provides a significantly more thorough cleaning and allows our technicians to perform most cleanings safely from the fireplace opening rather than at the top of the chimney.
After the system has been cleaned and all creosote has been removed from the fireplace, we’ll begin the inspection process. During this step, we check the following items:
- Clearance to combustibles
- Firebox
- Damper
- Smokeshelf
- Smoke chamber (video scanned)
- Flue tiles (video scanned)
Your technician can finish with an inspection of the exterior of the chimney. He’ll go over all of his findings with you and give you any recommendations he may have for better burning practices or necessary repairs.
Finally, your technician can collect payment for the services via check or credit card, and you’ll receive a digital copy of your receipt and paperwork by email immediately after the appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a cleaning every year?
Not necessarily. The NFPA recommends an annual inspection, but whether cleaning is needed depends on what the inspection finds. Our technician makes that call based on a visual flue inspection. Cleaning is recommended when 1/8 inch or more of creosote is visible. Some chimneys need it every year; others don’t. The inspection tells us which situation you’re in.
What should I look for when hiring a chimney sweep in Waukesha County?
